things to do in mauritiusFor a spectacular view of Port Louis and the island, climb the Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire at 825 meters. It is an easy 2 hour climb from the village of La Laura and takes approximately another 2 hours walk to Port Louis.

Tour the Moka mountains by a mountain bike, a horse or a jeep at the accessible 1450 hectars natural park of Domaine Les Pailles. Be sure to visit the sugar mill and rum distillery by train or horse carriage before dining in one of the local restaurants.

Go to Grand Bay, for watersports such as parasailing or to La Cuvette, a long silky sanded beach with clear water between Grand Bay and Cap Malheureux, for sailing, windsurfing or waterskiing.

Be sure to go diving on the west coast of Mauritius around Flic en Flac or in the north, at Trou aux Biches or the Northern Islands from November to May.

Go hiking in the Black River Gorges National Park, a 6800 hectars forest, to see indigenous plants, birds and wildlife. Black River Peak trail goes to Mauritius' highest mountain. On the other hand the alternative path, Maccabee Trail, plunges into the gorge to Black River.

Visit the La Vanille Reserve des Mascareignes which is commonly referred to as the ‘Crocodile Park' for its thousands of Nile crocodiles. Crocodile Park is the only place worldwide to breed aldabra tortoises and also has deers, monkeys, boars and an insectarium.
Rodrigues Island with its tiny, rugged and volcanic geography lies about 500km. northeast of Mauritius and is known as the anti stress island. The capital of Rodrigues Island, Port Mathurin, is only 7 streets wide. Rodrigues Island offers walking, diving, kitesurfing and deep sea fishing. You can take the Coraline Ships from Mauritius to Rodrigues Island. The voyage takes about 36 hours.
