St. Sebastian's Church
Built between 1749 and 1753, St. Sebastian's Church (SebastianKirsche) is one of the many Baroque Churches in Salzburg. The great Salzburg fire in 1818 which destroyed large sectors of Salzburg on the right side of the river also burned some parts of St. Sebastian's Church. The ceiling frescoes of the church painted by Paul Troger and the high altar painting depicting St. Sebastian were completely destroyed in this fire. Renovation of the church in the style of the 19th century started in 1820. The Baroque paintings were replaced by works of contemporary artists and the confessional boxes were all modernized.
The tomb of the well known physician Theophratus Bombastus von Hohenheim (also called "Paracelsus" since 1564) can be found in the passage to the world famous St. Sebastian's Cemetery.
The cemetery was built by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in around 1795 to replace the old cathedral cemetery. Well known Salzburg burghers and merchant families as well as famous personalities found their last resting place under the glorious arcades of this cemetery.
