Mozart's Birthplace in Salzburg
Salzburg is forever associated with its most famous citizen, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the house on Getreidegasse, in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756, is actually Salzburg's most famous tourist attraction. The mansion which also houses the Mozart Museum provides visitors with a fascinating insight into the life and times of one of the world's greatest composers.
The Mozart family lived on the third floor of this house for more than 26 years. The house was named as the Mozart's Geburtshaus after its owner and Mozart's friend, the merchant Johann Lorenz Hagenauer. The house consists of a kitchen, a small chamber, a living room, a bedroom and a study room. On exhibit in the historical rooms are manuscripts, documents and souvenirs, the original portraits of the family members such as the 1789 dated unfinished painting by Mozart's brother in law, Joseph Lange of "Mozart at the Piano" and the historical instruments (Mozart's concert piano, clavichord (early key instrument).
In 1994, the Mozart's Geburtshaus was renovated and organized by Prof. Elsa Prochazka according to state of the art technology of museum to protect the exhibits from possible damages. Admission charges are: EUR 5.50; EUR 1.50 for children.
